National Public Health Week 2013

1 May

Public Health is ROI: Save Lives, Save Money

Since 1995, the American Public Health Association (APHA) has encouraged communities abroad to dedicate the first week of April to bolster the successes of public health during National Public Health Week (NPHW). Each year, the APHA develops a national theme highlighting a particular public health issue. The 2013 theme, “Public Health is Return on Investment (ROI): Save Lives, Save Money,” sought to appeal to the significance of “investing in one’s health” as one would do in an investment portfolio, emphasized how investments in prevention would improve health and save healthcare dollars.

This year’s activities took place April 1-7, 2013. Daily health prevention themes paid homage to health and safety at home and in the workplace, improving safety for children at school, safety while on the move and community health. All health-centered organizations are welcome to become NPHW Partners by hosting events focused on the health cause du jour. Partners are encouraged to register their events online and are charged with disseminating public health messages and content to local and national governments, submitting opinion- based editorial commentaries to local newspapers, and use social media and a launching pad for educating masses about the NPHW prevention platform.
