CURRENT RESEARCH: Blacks in ‘Urban Heat Islands’ at Greater Risk of Heat Wave Deaths

Blacks are 52% more likely to live in neighborhoods with few shade trees and many heat-absorbing surfaces, otherwise referred to as ‘urban heat islands.’ Asians and Latinos are also more likely than whites to live in these locations. This spatial segregation leads to higher risk of death for minority communities during heat waves.
